My two indoor cats are not active and do not enjoy toys? How do I get them to play and have fun?
I have two indoor cats (7 and 2). I have a harness and a leash but I worry about them running away, because one is very sketchy and frightened of everything. They have a billion toys and I try to play with them with a feather wand but no one is interested. The 7 year old just sleeps and the 2 year old plays around about once a day. I realize that their diet is not so great right now, so I am switching to a healthy wet food diet soon. How do I encourage play? They are not overweight at all, just lazy!

Any way to stimulate my cat's brain?
Is there any way to stimulate my cat's brain with just a wand toy? I don't want to have to buy one of those hundred dollar things! Are there any games I can play with just a cat toy wand?
You can try putting the wand in an old cardboard box and make scratching noises with it, this usually makes the wand ten times more interesting. Or (and all my cats love this one) spread out an old blanket, stick the wand underneath it and move it about, the cats will sit on top of the blanket and be fully concentrated on following the wand's movements and it looks very cute when they pounce on it.
Other easy to make games is to take an old kitchen roll tube, cut a hole in the middle, close one end by folding it, fill it with cat treats, and close the other end. It is now your cat's job to swat, push, move the tube to make the treat fall out through the whole in the middle. This is a game they can play on their own, although if you have a cat that likes to shred cardboard and paper, you will need to keep an eye on it.
You can make a similar toy from an old tennis ball by cutting a hole in the middle of the ball. Or if you have an old card board box, you can cut different size holes in it, close it up, take some treats and show your cat how you're dumping treats or toys into the box, they can usually spend a long time getting the treats and toys out again.
Balls made out of silver foil are also a great hit with some of my cats (again keep an eye on your cat if it's a shredder) more so than the ones bought at the pet shop.
