Questions & Answers about Rope Bird Toy
Fun toys/cage decor for pet rats?
I have 5 rats and they just got huge new cages. But they seem kind of empty, They have igloos (pink igloo for girls and blue for boys ) and the girls have a wheel and one colorful wooden bird toy with rope attached to it. But other than that the cages seem bland. I've looked at some website so i don't need links please, but does anyone have rats of their own that have some ideas for me? just to spice up their cages? thanks!
Hammocks! There are plenty of kinds to choose from. Flat hammocks, envelope hammocks, tube hammocks, double hammocks and more. It might take a little while for your rats to warm up to them, but once they do, they'll love them. When I first added hammocks to the cage, the rats didn't care for them. By now (it's been a few months), they rarely sleep anywhere but the hammocks. Hammocks are also an excellent way to utilize the empty air space!
Rats don't care how much you pay for something, so have you tried simple cardboard boxes? I don't have any fancy plastic igloos, I just use various boxes like Kleenex tissue boxes, little postal boxes, whatever!
Be inventive. Got any little baskets? How about animal-safe stuffed animals? Many of them are perfect for a rat to curl up in or climb on. How about a real rock? These are usually very interesting to rats (they're smelly), plus they help keep the rats' nails dull. Really, keep your mind open! The world is full of objects that can be maagiccaaally transformed into a ratty favorite.
My cage includes:
three hammocks (I'm saving for more!)
several mineral chews (some are fruit-flavored, some are supposedly ice cream-flavored)
two litter boxes (one's a giant cat-sized one on the bottom level, the other is a tiny Pyrex baking dish on the middle level)
two Kleenex boxes
a plastic desk shelf
a large cardboard tunnel box
a smaller cardboard box
a box with "windows" cut into the sides
a jingly cat toy
various toys like toilet paper tube pinatas
..and I'm finished decorating.
I know you mentioned not to list sites, but seriously, these two are very helpful:

New Budgie/Parakeet Flight Cage?
I got a new flight cage. This is it.

Well, my budgie is now in a small cage that was from the petstore. Its only 14 by 13 by 16. Which is rediculously small. So I ordered that cage above.
I have has my bird for one month now. He doesnt like toys. He doesnt touch them. He did one day, I had a lil plastic ball with a bell in it. He trrew it in the air and stuff. The only toy I have in the cage is a a rope like stringy toy that he doesnt egnolidge is there. His names Bashfull.
1.) How can I find the right toys for Basfull? He isnt seeming to interested in them.
2.) Is that cage great? I want another budgie but my dad doesn't.
3.) Any where that I can buy great toys?
4.) How can I get him a bit more use to me?
5.) How do I switch cages? How to get him use to his bug new one
anything else to add?
Congrats on the upgrade! I am sure he'll be very happy now!
I personally use The Perch Store to buy my parrot's toys. If you sign up for the news letter, you can get a ton of discounts, and there always seem to be sales. I'd suggest buying a large variety of budgie sized toys, I am sure he actually likes them. Shreddable toys, leather toys, wooden block toys, and foraging toys. Not all birds like plastic, mine hates plastic. But she adores shredding vine balls! And throwing the toy around IS playing with it! One toy is pretty sad for a bird, actually. Toys keep them engaged and entertained. Rotate the toys on a weekly basis to keep him interested
The first poster is quite silly, of course parakeets and parrots play with toys! It keeps them mentally stimulated!
Start off slow when socializing. Get a good book, and sit near the cage. Talk to your little guy, get him used to being close. Offer him treats through the bars. Once he associates you with good, he'll be more ready to accept you. You have to gain his trust.
I'd personally suggest you stick with one bird for now. Keeping two budgies together will only cause them to bond to each other, not you. Then you will never be able to handle him.
