Questions & Answers about Parrots Cages Perches
How do you prepare for a arrival of a pet bird.?
Im going to get a baby quaker parrot and I was wondering what you would recommend for perches, toys etc and I already have a cage .
make sure the cage is clean, water to drink and food to eat! get a mineral block and cuttle bone.line the bottom of the cage either with sand paper for birds or newspaper. get a few toys so as not to get bored. a chewy toy a good bell, birds love bells. i wouldnt get the mirror just yet cos he may be afraid of it, get a cover for your cage so you can cover him of a night.
and bare in mind for a week or two while your bird is adjusting to his new surroundings he will be very quiet and won't do much, don't worry this is normal. always talk to your bird so he knows you are there and so he can bond with you. good luck
Parrot Perch Question?
i recently bought my sun conure a new cage with wooden perches inside. i've had him for 6 weeks and until the new cage he had plastic perches with rubber on top for traction. now it seems he really doesn't like the wooden perches, he's never on them and once or twice i saw him slip a bit. also they might be a tad too big for him. is there such a thing as a sticky strip of rubber to put on the wood for him? any other suggestions?
It sounds like you just have plain dowels in your cage, which aren't good for a bird's feet. They can cause arthritis because the pressure is constant and always the same.
A parrot needs at least four different kinds of perches in its cage, with different diameters, textures and hardness. At least one perch should be something softer like a rope perch for resting his feet. Manzanita is good for variety but this type of wood is also hard and slippery. Bottlebrush wood is fantastic, and birds love chewing on the rough bark. A cement perch will help keep your conures nails trimmed. In general, the diameter of the perch should be such that he can wrap his toes most of the way around them, but again, variety is key and if you have a variety of sizes your bird will figure it out.
I doubt your bird hates standing on wood -- in nature they live in tree branches, so it shouldn't upset him unless they are too slippery and he's falling off. Just invest in better perches. The ones that come with cages (even the expensive cages) are usually garbage and should be taken out.
If your conure has different perches, and they aren't slippery, and he's still falling off, then you need to take him to a vet. It could be indicative of health issues.
p.s. You should absolutely not glue anything to his perch as he could accidentally ingest the glue.
